It is vaguely alarming when you are invited to a 70s/80s fancy dress party and you can walk straight to your own, everyday, wardrobe and pick out three outfits straight off.

Well, if you will go shopping in various outlets to get fancy dress outfits, of course your walk in closet will fit the bill.
I have a few garments of the age you speak of. perhaps I shopped well and trendily, I find they are all wearable today, whatever I choose to wear them for and not out of place either. -
